It’s said that many things in life go in circles. That’s exactly how I felt in late June as I made my way into the Tauranga studio of Coast FM to broadcast a radio breakfast show for the first time in nearly forty years.
Here’s a quick summary of how this came to be. Coast, a music network owned by NZME, is based in Auckland. But this year Brian Kelly, the network breakfast host for the last five years, returned to Tauranga where he’d been the city’s leading radio personality since 1980.
Coast, which plays hit music of the 1970s and 1980s, is hugely successful in Tauranga, and with Kelly already a household name in the booming city, it was decided to bring him back to host a local breakfast show on Coast.
‘BK’, as he’s known, started his radio career in 1970 and seems destined to complete a staggering half century in the industry in the town where he’s made thousands of fans.
But he took three weeks’ holiday in early July and didn’t want to give up the local gains he’d made this year. So he persuaded his Auckland bosses that he could get his old friend, flatmate and colleague – that’s me – to fill in for a few weeks while he went to the UK.
